Virt-A-Mate Guide: How to Get Started With VaM in VR
Updated 13 October 2026
Virt-A-Mate (VaM) is the most played adult VR game there is: a PC sandbox with physics-driven characters you build, pose and animate yourself, plus a huge community library of looks and scenes. It's also the hardest to get into, so here's the short version.
Quick answer
Virt-A-Mate runs on a Windows PC, with a PC VR headset or a Quest connected over Link, Air Link, Steam Link or Virtual Desktop. Download it, unzip it to a short folder path, run the VR launcher with your headset connected, and start from one of the included scenes before building your own.
What Virt-A-Mate is
VaM is less a game than a studio: you get lifelike characters with soft-body physics, a scene editor, posing and animation tools, and plugins written by its community. Most people start from ready-made scenes and characters made by others, then tweak them.
If you'd rather skip the editor, vamX is a separate add-on that turns VaM into a pick-and-play game with ready scenes and positions.
What you need
- A Windows gaming PC: a strong graphics card (RTX 3060 or better; more for busy scenes) and 16 GB of RAM or more.
- A PC VR headset, or a Meta Quest connected to the PC.
- Plenty of disk space: community content adds up quickly.
Install and start
- 1Download Virt-A-Mate (the Play VR Game button on its page takes you to the download).
- 2Unzip it to a short path such as C:\VaM; very long folder paths cause errors.
- 3Connect your headset to the PC (Link, Air Link, Steam Link or Virtual Desktop for a Quest).
- 4Run the VR launcher in the VaM folder, or the desktop launcher to try it without a headset.
- 5Open one of the included scenes from the main menu to learn the controls.
Getting more out of it
- Community scenes and characters come as .var packages you drop into the AddonPackages folder.
- Turn down physics quality and mirror reflections if the frame rate drops.
- Save your own scenes often: VaM rewards experimenting.

There's a free version to try; the full version and newest builds are for paying supporters.
What's the difference between VaM and vamX?
VaM is the sandbox and editor; vamX is an add-on that gives you ready-made scenes and an easy menu on top of it.
